The tournament was founded by the International Management Group (IMG) in 1999, and was first known as the Anderson Consulting Match Play Championship. The tournament has undergone several name changes since it first took place, including naming by sponsorships such as Accenture and Cadillac. In 2016, Dell Technologies became the main sponsor and it has been named the Dell Match Play Championship ever since.
Who gets chosen to play?
Based on the Official World Golf Ranking, the top 64 golfers in the world get together and duke it out to see who has what it takes to be crowned the Dell Match Play Champion and receive the Walter Hagen Cup. The trophy is named after legendary golfer Walter Hagen who won 11 major golf championships during his career.
How exactly do the match play rounds work?
The tournament is a match play event. The 64 golfers are divided into 16 groups of four players each in a round-robin style match. The person in each 16 groups that earns the most points, advance to the next level, which begins with 1 of 4 knockout stages.
- The first knockout stage is a match between the top golfers from each of the initial 16 groups and consists of eight matches.
- The second knockout stage, or the quarterfinals, is the eight winners of the first knockout stage playing against each other in four matches.
- The third knockout stage, or the Semifinals is the four winners of the Quarterfinals playing against each other in two matches.
- The fourth knockout stage, or the Championship round, is the two winners of the Semifinals playing against each other in the final match to see who will become this years champion.
Is winning a Dell Match play Championship a big deal?
